Day 7: Discovering Icebergs – A Journey at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon (Southeast)
A whole new day in Iceland. An unforgettable one by the way! our day started at the hostel in Hoefn and a breakfast at a gas station, and from there we took off on the trip. A day full of unforgettable surprises.
Breakfast at the gas station
We hit the road for 1h but only my dad knew what we were going to do. For me and mom it was a complete surprise. by the way, the weather was perfect as we left.
Suddenly we started seeing beautiful scenery of Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe.Vatnajökull “spilling out” of its basin in several spots
One hour later we arrived at Jökursárlón, the glacier lake in front of the glacier Vatnajökull.
This is the placeThis is the viewIcebergs all around with a gigantic glacier on the backWe dressed up for the right temperatureAnd we went to the boat
And off we went towards the glacier among the icebergsThe glacier Vatnajōkull
The glacier cracks the whole time and from time to time it valves and releases huge pieces of ice into the water, which become icebergs. The 3 musketeers and the icebergsMommy and sonSomebody really enjoyed the view! After a beautiful boat ride, we decided to eats fish and chips prepared in one of the many food trucks there. Local cod fish, delicious!
After lunch we went to the Diamond Beach, right in front of Jörkullsárlón.

The icebergs that break out from the glacier float in the lagoon for certain time and later they are pushed by the strong glacier waters into the ocean. After that they stand next to the beach until they melt and reach a certain size to be pushed back to the beach by the waves. Beautiful!Happy boy! Next to a huge diamond!
And again we hit the road for another 1h until this spot, at the bottom of the glacier park Skaftafell.
The surprise: a hike on the glacier with ice axe and cramponsThis is the glacier we will hike on!On the way to the glacier. Gabriel chatting with the guide.GearHere we are! It was a great experience, lots of fun!Beautiful teamDrinking glacier water

We were hiking for 4h… time to go to the hotel and relax.
By the way, when we were leaving the glacier national park, we heard a Glacier flooding blocked roads in the south of Iceland. A bridge was damaged and around 70 of roads are blocked. Our hotel is just 10 before the blockage begins, we were lucky today.
Are we going to be able to continue our roadtrip tomorrow as planned? We do not know, but now it is time to relax. Tomorrow we will think about it… scenes for the next chapter.
Today we drove 2.5h and stopped at 3 spots. The experience of seeing, touching and interacting with glaciers and icebergs is simply amazing!!
