Day 8: Iceland Road Trip – Embracing the Unexpected (South)
We woke up late not knowing if and when the road would reopen for us to continue our road trip… what is the remedy? Enjoy the moment!
Long and relaxing breakfast enjoying local Icelandic delicacies, like the Skyr yogurt.View from the hotelThis is our hotel. Fosshotel Núpar. Beautiful view from the mountains.See that Google Maos recommends to take a detour of almost 15h to drive the 70Km from our hotel to our next planned stop. No way, we will try to come close to the road closure and see what we can do.On the way to the road closure. South Iceland is beautiful, a huge mountain block along the coast with many waterfalls!
And then we found an endless “fresh” lava field covered with moss and tundra
Very different landscapeHere is the road closure. But the ranger mentioned that hopefully in 1h it will open. Let’s cross the finger.Let’s wait here with all those people who had the same idea of trying to pass through In the meantime we enjoyed the small beauties of natureLava field with moss
Soft moss feels like carpetAnd here we are, eating typical Icelandic snacks: dry fish or fish jerky. Yummy! Mommy did not like it at all, she said our breath afterwards was bad! 🙂
We tried a small gravel road for almost 5h to reach our next destination, but it was in the middle of the mountains, no cell phone signal and our hybrid car has no spare tire… so we decided not to continue. We turned around and decided to chose a nice restaurant in the area and wait.
This would have been the drive around the mountains
But we stopped at the restaurant Kjarr, in front of a waterfall. here the website: https://www.kjarrrestaurant.isCarpaccio as appetizer

We ordered Arctic Char.
Arctic CharUnplanned but amazing lunch! Our dessert, the “Happy Marriage” Icelandic cake, made of Rhibarbe. After lunch we decided to drive back to the hotel we spent our last night to wait at the bar… it is raining hard, it is already 20:00h and no news of when the road will open.Iceland has an online service to check live the condition of every road. We could monitor life the situation of the roadblock and as soon as we saw it opened, we hit the road. Here the website: https://www.road.is
Finally at 20:30h we got the information the road was reopened but only with one lane for both directions. So we started our journey… see the destruction of the glacier flooding in this video. Half of the road is gone and the bridge got heavily damaged.
This is our guesthouse for this night in the village of Brú. It is called Brú Guesthouse, a great modern villa in the middle of nowhere with beautiful Mountain View’s. Here is the website: http://bruguesthouse.is
