Day 11: Hiking Fagradasfjall – A Volcano Adventure in Iceland

Iceland or Windland? 🙂

It you come to Iceland, you should try to see an active volcano. And this was our plan! And we went for it, the outcome was a bit unexpected…

We booked a half day hike (6h-7h) with BusTravel Iceland. Here the link to the tour: https://bustravel.is/iceland-tours/afternoon-and-evening-volcano-hike

This is us having a coffee while we wait for our bus
First top to appreciate the beautiful volcanic lake near Reykjavik
The wind started to pick up speed
Then we stopped at the geothermal area of Seltún
Beautiful place to see mud pots and vents
Happy me in Seltún
And we finally arrive at the beginning of the hike. Here our guide explaining the track and the rules. Here he mentioned that a few minutes before the weather bureau had declared wind gusts yellow level.
Gusts of 53mph or 85Km/h
Some wind
And let’s go!
The volcano we plan to see erupted on 2021. The name of the volcano is easy: Fagradasfjall
First viewpoint: Mom next to fresh lava fields from 2021
And we kept moving: contrast between old (2000 years old) and new (2 years old) lava fields. See mine and mom’s face due to the wind gust!

And here it started. Wind gusts which made us lose our balance.

Wind gusts
This is where we were. See on this picture where all the fresh lava flew through.

We advanced a bit but the winds got stronger and we had to stop and decide what to do.

We stopped at the lava field still smoking, although it is already 3 years old.
This is where we stopped (blue dot). The volcano crater Fagradasfjall was 2.5 ahead of us but we could not advance any longer. Mission aborted, but a lot of good laughs and great stories to tell!
And here we are

Look at the way down, very easy 🙂 Mom almost fell twice.

Walking down the volcano facing strong wind gusts

On the way back to Reykjavik, we stopped at a place where fish bones are dried. Icelanders, Scandinavians, Europeans and other cultures use it as food supplement, stock and broth and fertilizer.

Dried rests of cod

After so much wind and at the end also rain, we decided a good piece of fish would be our reward. As soon we were dropped in Reykjavík, we walked to a food market.

Hlemmur Mathöll

We decided to try the restaurant Skáll. Great place, later we saw it was once listed in the Michelin list of great restaurants.

Cod fish for lunch with a good white wine

After a great lunch/dinner, we could not find any taxi. It was raining and maybe this was the reason. So we decided to grab some of the electric scooters available all around the city. But there was an issue, Mom does not know how to ride, she is afraid. So we had to improvise…

2 electric scooter for 3

And finally we came to the hotel for a hot shower and a rest. Great and different day, full of great experiences, great feeling of accomplishment and a full tummy!

Tomorrow we will walk around Reykjavík! See you tomorrow!
