Day 4: Exploring Sacré-Cœur and Versailles – A Parisian Journey

Today we will go to the Sacre Coir Basilica and Palace of Versailles, a UNESCO world heritage with endless gardens. It is located in the outskirts of Paris.

We started our day walking again. The Basilica of Sacre Coeur is just 19min away from our hotel, but the stairs to bring us to the top of Montmartre, where the basilica is located, is defintely not a joke! 🙂

Easy going walk…
… until we saw this!
Sacré-Coeur Basilica

What I learned today at the Basilica is that it was built after France lost a big war in 1871. The country was going through tough times, and the church was meant to bring hope, faith, and peace. It stands as a symbol of repentance and healing for the people.

Look closer, it is beautiful.

Facts about Sacré Coeur: “The Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Paris, completed in 1914, sits atop Montmartre, the highest point in the city. It features a Romano-Byzantine style and a striking white exterior made from travertine stone. The basilica offers panoramic views of Paris and houses one of the world’s largest mosaics, depicting Christ” ChatGPT.

Look at the city view (rainy day) from the Sacré-Coeur Basilica.

As you can see, it was a rainy day. So we decided we did not want to try to go to Versailles by the regular bus that drives between Paris and the Palace. We could end up soaked and cold. So we decided to use Uber to bring us to Versailles, and it was a good choice. So we went…

As you can see, it is a significant ride, almost 1h if there is moderate traffic.

Palace Versailles – Entrance

Also for this place you should buy tickets in advance. Long lines, lots and lots of tourists everywhere… here is the link to their official website.

Facts about Palace of Versailles: “The Palace of Versailles, built in the 17th century by Louis XIV, is a symbol of French royal power. It features the iconic Hall of Mirrors and expansive gardens. Abandoned after the French Revolution, it became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979 and is a popular tourist destination today” ChatGPT.

First we toured inside and later on we went to the endless gardens at the back. This is how it looks inside. Not necessarily my decoration style, but still nice and luxurious.

And now let’s go to the “small” backyward.

This is the backside view of the castle.
And this is the “mini” garden.
We decided to walk around the castle and at this place we saw these nimbus clouds, that’s when we decided to rush to the front because we knew the rain would be strong… and it was!

When it rains, it apparently does not matter where you are in the world, it becomes very hard to get an Uber. 🙂 But eventually one brought us from Versailles back to Paris. We were hungry by that time and we decided to repeat the restaurant of the first day, Chez Pippo next to the Eiffel Tower. It was delicious again!

The weather in Paris was a mix of cloudy and partial sunny, so we decided to wander around the streets of Paris a bit more just to enjoy the Parisian vibe.

Beautiful place!
It is super easy to walk in Paris, the sidewalks and pathways are abundant.
House Boats along the Seine River.
Who doesn’t take a picture like that, huh?

This is how we ended our day. Lots of great sightseeing, lots of rain, lots of fun, lots of good food… lots of great memories!

Tomorrow we will explore a different side of France, a place called Normandy.
