Day 6: Mont Saint-Michel – Tides, History, and Adventure

Today is unfortunately the last day of our trip in France… but it will be memorable, I am sure. Because we are going to visit Mont Saint-Michel! Uhuuu!!!

Mont Saint-Michel, here we go!

Facts about Mont Saint-Michel: “Mont Saint-Michel is a small island in Normandy, France, known for its medieval architecture and stunning abbey. Built in the 8th century, it became a major pilgrimage site. The abbey atop the island is a Gothic masterpiece, and the village below it is surrounded by medieval walls.

The island is famous for its dramatic tides. During high tide, the sea surrounds Mont Saint-Michel, turning it into an island, while at low tide, vast sandbanks are revealed, making it accessible by foot. These tides can vary by up to 14 meters (46 feet)” ChatGPT.

This is the entrance, it looks like a medieval castle!

We explored this place walking back and forth, up and down, inside the city and along the walls… everywhere you look you see something fascinating, old and full of history!

Beautiful picture!
Here at Mont Saint-Michel the buildings and small village is at the ground level and up there is the church. We are going up!
Going further up.
This is the view from the very top.

And we finally arrived at the Church, the highest spot here. You want to learn more about how the Church started here? Read below.

Look the gargoyles around the Church!

Facts about gargoyles “Gargoyles are carved stone creatures found on buildings, particularly Gothic cathedrals. Their primary function is practicalโ€”they serve as waterspouts, diverting rainwater away from the building’s walls to prevent erosion. Architecturally, they often take the form of grotesque or fantastical creatures, such as dragons, monsters, or animals. Gargoyles also hold symbolic meanings, often believed to ward off evil spirits or represent the struggle between good and evil. Famous examples can be found on Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris” ChatGPT.

After walking a lot, we decided to stop for a lunch in one of the typical brasseries in the village.

Fantastic place, looks like middle age!

Time to go back to the hotel, get the car and drive back to Paris… let’s say goodbye to this magical place!

Mont Saint-Michel, see you soon!

From Mont Saint-Michel we had to hit the road for 5h to drive back to Paris, Challes de Gaulle Airport. We will overnight in a hotel inside the airport so that tomorrow morning we can walk very early to the gate for our departure flight.

After a nice and long drive, we arrived at the airport. We returned the car, went to the hotel, got a room, ordered our dinner and suddenly we see something on the TV: violent protests going on in Paris in that moment. Monuments on fire, trash on the street being put on fire… OMG.

Despite of this not so nice ending, I must say the trip was absolutely awesome!! So many nice places, so much history, endlessly delicious food… France, we will come back! ๐Ÿ™‚
