Day 4: Exploring the Vivid Colors of Yellowstone

Letโ€™s go for our second day in Yellowstone!! Today we decided to enter the park through the West entrance to avoid traffic. Unfortunately we saw a terrible accident, car and motorbikeโ€ฆ so please be always attentive to the traffic, there are many cars driving everywhere.

First stop of the day, Paint Pots.

Fountain Paint Pots
Fountain Paint Pots

Fountain Paint Pots is a beautiful place, really worth seeings but for us the highlight was just about to comeโ€ฆ the Midway Geyser Basin.

This river is called Firehole River

As soon as you park your car, there is a bridge over the Firehole River you have to cross. Right after the bridge, you have to start walking uphill and the images you see are theseโ€ฆ

From the top of the hill, there is hot water flowing down to the cold river. Beautiful! The hot water leaves these vivid orange color on the rock.
The hot water comes clearly from up thereโ€ฆ letโ€™s see.

This is where the water comes from. Take a look at this place.

Excelsior Geyser Crater

And from this beautiful crater there is a catwalk that leads to further up the hill. And when we got there, we saw the Grand Prismatic Spring.

The Grand Prismatic Spring. The most amazing vidid natural colors I have ever seen in my life!
It is a hot water spring and as in the excelsior crater, the water has Sulfur and this is the reason for the blue color in the center. The away from the center, the colder it gets. Depending on the temperature, different bacteria resistant to different temperatures can be found and they produce the different colors you see. AMAZING!

Facts about this spring โ€œThe Grand Prismatic Spring, located in Yellowstone National Park, is the largest hot spring in the United States and the third largest in the world. It measures about 370 feet in diameter and is over 120 feet deep. Known for its vibrant colors, the springโ€™s rainbow-like hues are caused by microbial mats that grow around the edges, creating shades of red, orange, yellow, and green. The deep blue center is due to the intense heat. Water temperatures can reach up to 160ยฐF (70ยฐC). Itโ€™s a popular tourist attraction and a key feature of Yellowstoneโ€™s geothermal activity.โ€ ChatGPT

There are 2 more springs nearby. Although they are also beautiful, after youโ€™ve seen the Grand Prismatic Spring, all other springs somehow become less impressive.

After you leave this area and hit the road, right after it there is an exit of the road with a parking lot that has a pathway to the top of this hill you see on the picture. And we decided to go there to see if there would be another nice view from the Grand Prismatic spring.

Beautiful Grand Prismatic Spring
Here we are
Beautiful sight!

From this same place, there is a hiking trail to Fairy Falls, we decided to try it. It is a 60min trail in one direction, so do it if you like hiking in the woods. The path is very nice and well marked.

Now itโ€™s time to go to one of the most iconic spots of the park, the Old Faithful. Letโ€™s go!

On the way back another beautiful pond

First, letโ€™s stop for a refreshment before going to Old Faithful. In front of of Old Faithful there is a set of buildings, with restaurants, lodging, shopping, etc.

Time for ice cream
Old Faithful Geyser in action! ๐Ÿ™‚

Facts about Old Faithful “Old Faithful, located in Yellowstone National Park, is one of the parkโ€™s most famous geysers. It earned its name due to its relatively predictable eruption schedule, erupting every 60 to 110 minutes. Each eruption lasts 1.5 to 5 minutes, shooting hot water up to 180 feet into the air. The geyser has been erupting consistently for centuries, making it a major attraction. Its eruptions release around 3,700 to 8,400 gallons of boiling water, making it a powerful display of Yellowstoneโ€™s geothermal activity. Old Faithful is one of over 500 geysers in the park.” ChatGPT.

Due to traffic jam, we decided to cut the 8 through the center and go straight to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

Grand Canyon of Yellowstone… but wait, from here, it is not yet very obvious it is a canyon.

You can walk along the trails, it is really worth it! Look at this waterfall from another spot from the trail.

If you keep walking you will see more and more rocks and mountains like this.

And then, suddenly…

And at this moment we decided to go to Gardiner, the little city at the North Entrance, to go for a little adventure…

On the way, another traffic jam because a black bear was spotted and all cars stopped.

The bear is back there, not easy to see without a professional camera because we should not come close.

And ALMOST too late but we did arrive at the rafting tour meeting point.

Daddy on one side, mommy on the other and I am in the middle. ๐Ÿ™‚ Mom even cried at the beginning before she realized it was safe. ๐Ÿ™‚ I was super excited!
Great adventure!!

As a reward after such an intense day, we decide to have dinner in a local place, reat typical local place, which has a nice terrace in front of the river and we tried Bison steak! The place is called Iron Hose Bar & Grille and is located in Gardiner at the North Entrance of the park. Really good food and ambient!

Happy family!

After that, we drove to Bozeman again! Great adventurous day!
