Day 7: from the oldest town in USA to the amazing historic and vivid pearl of Georgia!

… and we woke up in St. Augustine after celebrating July, 4th at the beach! Since yesterday we were confronted with the news that the third hurricane will hit USA in 2025, it is a tropical storm and was named Chantal. It will apparently hit the Carolines, in the region of Charleston and Myrtle Beach. Charleston was supposed to be our next destination, but look st the storm forecast:

According to the forecast, Chantal will potentially pass Savannah in Georgia and will go to the Carolinas. Dad had planned that we spend two days in Charleston’s after St. Augustine, so we had to change plans. We rebooked our hotel in Charlestown from 2 nights to 1 night. From July, 5th to the 6th, we decided to spend in Savannah, Georgia! Uhuuu, I wanted to visit Savannah anyway!

But first we went to St. Augustine historic district to explore it!

First we went it Castillo de San Marcos. Here the details according to ChatGPT:

Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, in St. Augustine, Florida, is a 17th-century Spanish stone fortress. Construction began on October 2, 1672, using coquina to protect Spain’s American territories. It’s the oldest masonry fort in the continental U.S., symbolizing centuries of colonial power struggles. Today, it stands well-preserved, offering visitors a window into early American history.

Beautiful! Podes masonry construction in the whole country!
It is shaped like a star!
At the entrance.
Read these pictures!
As we arrived, there was a cannon ceremony going on!
This is how it used to be done hundreds of years ago!
Look the scenery!
The Castillo inside.
Beautiful place! The military in this fort could protect the river from all angles!
This map shows the reason why St. Augustine and this fort were so important. The ships coming from Mexico with gold and other precious stuff used to make their last stop here before heading to Europe. So cool to understand such things!
This is the original Coat of Arms, that used to be seen at the entrance of the fort.
This is one of the rooms inside the fort. Look how they used to sleep together.

After the Castillo de San Marcos, we went to St. Augustine to explore the historic city center.

The is the gate of the old town!
This is St. George’s street. A old town’s well preserved street, full of cafes and restored colonial buildings! We had a snack at the Spanish Bakery, I highly recommend it!

There are many historic houses like this one along St. George street. This one is from 1750!
At the other end of the street you find the Basilica.
Beautiful Spanish style Basilica!
After the Basilica, a cross the Constitution Plaza, we went to Avikes Street. Apparently this is the oldest street in the continental USA!! 😳. The stores here are basically art galleries, boutiques and small local restaurants, very nice!
Now it is time to go back to the car. We need to drive to Savannah. So we decided to return to the parking lot walking back the river walk.
Look at this place!
Goodbye St. Augustine, see you soon!

And here we are, after 2.5hours, we arrived in Savannah!

Dad got a great last minute deal!
The is the Savannah River. Look at this pearl on the river!
Beautiful river promenade!
We decided to explore the historic district in Savannah. Many many many buildings like this. Colonial buildings nicely renovated! Lots of people on the streets and in the bars and restaurants.
Typical historic Savannah.
River Plant promenade. Beautiful place!
Many restaurants, cafes and bars.
After walking some time, we decided to have food. Nothing like Google to propose a good place we as tourists normally would never find by accident. We started our walk…
Repeal33… wait and see.
Great vibe!
That’s how we started.
Grilled octopus and baked oysters as appetizer… simply delicious!!!
Schnitzel for me, Read Oak Salad with shrimps for them… simply AMAZING!!!
Mom and dad ordered a home made Limoncello to finish the dinner. I watched on YouTube how to make this drink, dad also explained me what a Digestif means. Cool, I did not know that, I will try when I turn 21!

This is simply THE BEST RESTAURANT OF THE TEIP SO FAR!!! Here the link.

And we headed back to the hotel to rest and get ready for tomorrow!

Sunset in Savannah.

See you tomorrow!
